Pre-Convention workshops will begin on Friday, November 4, 2011 with workshops that reguire pre-registration.

Friday evening will feature a reception at the Indianapolis Museum of Art from 6 to 10 pm with Enid ZImmerman as the keynote speaker at 8:15pm.

The convention will run all day Saturday November 5 with workshops, presentations, and a vendor's area at the Marten House in Indianapolis.

The Saturday keynote will be Marvin Bartel.

On Saturday evening, there will be an Award's Celebration for all registered attendees and a movie night for AEAI Student Attendees.

The convention will continue Sunday until noon with workshops and presentations along with keynote speaker Bruce Langton.

Sure Sign of Summer: Broad Ripple Art Fair, the Art Center’s largest fundraiser, is Indy’s traditional kick off to the summer festival season. This year the Art Fair is May 21-22, 2011 with a special preview party Friday night, May 20 from 6-8 p.m.

Back by Popular Demand: Return Wristbands Visitors last year gobbled up the wristbands allowing them to return Sunday for free. Some were bummed they had to wear the band overnight, but we know you understand that we do have to make them tight enough so they can’t be slipped off and given to visitors who haven’t paid for a ticket. For that reason, we also can’t accept any visitors on Sunday whose bands have been cut and re-taped.
Drawing for a Free Class Fair goers who purchase tickets in advance can write their name, email address and phone number on the back of their ticket. When they turn in their ticket at the gate, they will automatically be entered in a drawing for $250 good toward an art class or workshop at the Art Center. "WHEELS" The Oil Paintings of: Tom Butters and Ron Barrett
Award winning artists of racing, cars, and motorcycles. Celebrate racing in the month of May!
Tom Butters career was in advertising following his studies in art at Indiana University. He was involved in motor sports – in the 60’s reporting for the Indianapolis Star and contributing racing cartoons; later as PR director for Indianapolis Raceway Park; and then as advertising supervisor for a number of companies including Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Pirelli. Tom was also a competition driver with licenses in SCCA and IMSA. His oil paintings have won many awards. He is presently painting instructor at the Hagerstown, IN Arts Place. Ron Barrett of Martinsville is a resident artist at the Art Sanctuary (Studio 103A) and paints a variety of subjects in oils and acrylics. He especially enjoys motorcycle and car themes. He frequently visits car shows and paints on site, "plein air", to capture his subject matter and the energy of the moment. Ron has received awards for his abstract impressionistic street scenes, and most recently at the "2011 Artesian Art Show" for his painting of a motorcycle.

All A.E.A.I. members are invited to enter work in this exhibit. Let’s make this our best attended exhibit and reception ever!

Art teachers may enter 5 pieces from each school they represent. You must be an A.E.A.I. member to participate. Joining is easy and rewarding!!

One winner will be selected to receive the grand prize package which includes a museum trip to New York City for the artist, one parent and the art teacher. This should be original artwork and NOT a photocopy of the artwork. What more motivation do you need to show off some great art work?! Tell your friends!!

District 5 School Spotlight

Each month this school year we are going to spotlight a school in District 5. For the month of August we are spotlighting Eileen Savoldi from I.P.S. School 65, she has taught there for the last four years. Eileen was excited to share with the A.E.A.I. audience her experience creating a mural in her school’s lunchroom.

This is what Eileen stated about her experience:

Last summer the building was repainted leaving our lunch room with a stark white wall in need of decoration. Our Principal, Janet Troutman, requested a mural not just to add color and ambience but inspiration. A theme, centered around our District’s four basic values of Excellence, Scholarship, Respect and Courage, was chosen. Ms. Troutman desired that our own students’ forms and faces be employed to express each concept. Digital photos of students were taken, cast on the wall with an LCD projector and traced.

Latex wall paint was generously provided through I.P.S. Students from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades couldn’t wait to participate in the painting. The project took up the last quarter of the school year.

I overheard a number of lunch room discussions about the children in the mural. The boys and girls were saying “That looks like me.” I was delighted to learn that so many students personally identified with the art work and, hopefully, the theme behind it.

Executing a project of this nature takes a good deal of planning and preparation, but I believe it will have a lasting and positive effect on the school and its student body.

GREAT NEWS!

On February 23rd the IPS teachers were sent an e-mail that outlined the budget cuts for the 2010-2011 year. Included in these cuts were the art programs at the kindergarten and 1st grades. Indianapolis public School system was faced with $26 million in budget cuts.

Dr. White outlined his plan in a PowerPoint which included 15.7 art teachers would be cut. The AEAI teachers of IPS went into action. We attended the following budget meetings held on March 3, and March 24, armed with questions and support for our position. I spoke at the school board meeting; several art teachers e-mailed board members, and spoke at the public meetings.

The AEAI IPS art teachers have asked me to send a special thanks to the President of AEAI Brad Venable who wrote letters to each member of the school board in support of the art program, and AEAI Advocacy Chair, Clyde Gaw, who came and spoke at the public meeting held at Tech high School, advocating art programs at the primary levels.

We are thrilled to announce that through a well organized and consorted effort of AEAI to keep art programs at the kindergarten and 1st grades, Dr. White has decided that the art and music cuts in kindergarten and first grades are off the table. Art will be taught at the kindergarten and 1st grades.

In these tough economy times we need to remain diligent in our efforts towards art advocacy. Stay involved.

Art Education Advocacy Events

There are two very important dates coming up in January to show your support for the Arts.

The ISTA Legislative Kick Off event at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis is on January 19. The registration will take place from 3:30 to 4:15. You will then be able to speak with legislators who represent the districts we live in and teach in. This is a very important public education advocacy. If you are a member of ISTA I encourage you to attend.

The second event is the annual Arts Advocacy Day sponsored by the Indiana Coalition of the Arts on January 26 at the Indianapolis State House. This event begins at 9:00 am.

Youth Art Month

The 2010 Youth Art Month is fast approaching. I encourage everyone to participate. The celebration will take place on Sunday, March 7 at the Indianapolis Statehouse. Set-up for the event will take place at 11:00 am, with the reception following at 2:30 pm. Each school may have 5 pieces of student art displayed.

This year a new feature to the event has been added. High school art teachers may choose to place their entries in a juried show. Awards will be announced at the reception. Each high school teacher must clearly mark whether they simply want the work displayed or judged. Next year, all high school work will be judged.

New Year Updates

Hope everyone had a great winter break and is starting off the new year with lots of exciting lessons in your classrooms. I recently have been added as a District 5 Co-Representative. My name is Addie Simpson and I am an art teacher at Terre Haute North High School in Vigo County. I will be helping Sidney Allen represent you as teachers of District 5. I am very excited to get to meet everyone.

I thought I would start the year off with posting about the 2009 AEAI Fall Conference.

The 2009 AEAI Fall Conference had many things to offer art educators. The weekend was filled with many workshops and presentations that provided art teachers with new ideas for lessons, interesting ways to enhance their teaching, and a time to connect with other art teachers from the around the state.

Some of the highlights of the weekend included 3 keynote speakers that each talked about very important issues in art education. The weekend started with Terry Barrett, Ph.D., who is the author of 5 books ranging in the subject matter of art criticism to aesthetics. Dr. Deborah Reeve, the Executive Director of the National Art Education Association spoke to attendees on Friday. She focused on important issues in the art education field and explained her role as Executive Director. The conference ended with Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, who focused on her art and activism throughout the years.

A wide variety of workshops were also available for participants throughout the weekend. Areas of computer arts, painting, ceramics, drawing, fibers, and sculpture were available. I especially enjoyed a workshop on Global Art. The presenter gave teachers ideas on how to include art into all subjects. She focused on using recycled found objects to make a bas-relief. I walked away with a lesson plan and example that I incorporated into my introduction to sculpture class when I returned from conference.

The free district workshops were also a way for art teachers in each district to get to know each other. District 5 worked on making a primary and secondary color introduction book. Sidney Allen led the production of the books and each teacher left with an example to take back to their classroom.

The 2009 conference provided a lot of room for professional growth and time to have fun. I believe whether you are a veteran or beginning teacher it is always nice to be around other art educators and you can always learn something new. I hope everyone can attend the 2010 AEAI Conference which is going to be held November 4,5,6 at the Hilton Fort Wayne/Grand Wayne Convention Center.

St. Mary of the Woods Retreat

The AEAI St. Mary of the Woods Retreat is set to begin at noon on July 13, 2009, and continue until 1:00 PM July 16, 2009. This annual art educator retreat will include several workshops including ceramics, painting, batik, and tie dye filled with plenty of time for collaboration with other art educators from throughout the state of Indiana. The cost for this great opportunity is $135 for double occupancy with all meals included. Come and join in the fun when creative art educators gather.
